Lyons View: this familiar street, though hardly a mile and a half long, has a rich and surprising history that is guaranteed to surprise. It’s the setting of Knoxville’s first enduring work of fine art, it’s been the home of an African American community for well over a century, it’s the address of East Tennessee’s first mental hospital, and of Knoxville’s first 18-hole golf course. Poet Wallace Stevens described it in detail, Tennessee Williams alluded to it in a play, and Duke Ellington performed here—and a particularly influential four-star Air Force general grew up here.

The Eugenia Williams House is thrilled to host a monthly lecture series with the Knoxville History Project. On the first Wednesday of the month, join us for coffee and an informal lecture on Knoxville History presented by historian Jack Neely.
